The idea is simple: ask Talkatone for the port-out PIN, start a number port in Google Voice, then wait for the migration to complete. It is useful if you already have a Talkatone number and want to keep it under Google Voice for longer-term use.

Google Voice and Talkatone policies can change. Treat the current Google Voice and Talkatone pages as the final source before acting.

Preparation

Check these first:

  • the Talkatone number can still receive SMS or calls;
  • the Google Voice account can access the personal number-porting flow;
  • the Talkatone number has not been reclaimed or restricted;
  • Google Voice says the number is eligible to port in.

Prepare:

  • Talkatone number in US format, such as 888-888-8888;
  • the English name on the Talkatone account;
  • Talkatone account email;
  • number creation or activation date;
  • new carrier: Google Voice;
  • port-out PIN or authorization information from Talkatone support.

The source article says the reply may arrive in about one business day, but actual timing can vary. Do not delete the number or close the Talkatone account while waiting.

Start the Google Voice Port

Open Google Voice on desktop:

In settings, look for Port a number to Google Voice or a similar option.

General flow:

  1. Enter the Talkatone number without +1.
  2. Verify by SMS or phone call.
  3. Let Google Voice check whether the number can be ported.
  4. Fill in current carrier account information, account name, and PIN.
  5. Fill in address information. Use an address that reasonably matches the number area code.
  6. Pay the Google Voice porting fee.

Google’s own documentation says personal Google Voice number porting for US mobile numbers costs 20 USD, and not every number is eligible.

Waiting

After submission, wait. The BankNav source says Talkatone to Google Voice can take about 4 to 7 days, so do not cancel and restart too quickly.

During this period:

  • do not delete the number in Talkatone;
  • do not close the Talkatone account;
  • do not cancel the Google Voice port unless the information is clearly wrong;
  • watch for Google Voice emails asking for corrections.

If Google Voice says the account information does not match, re-check the name, address, PIN, and any wording from Talkatone support.

After the Port

Google Voice will email you after the port completes. The number should then live under Google Voice, and the original Talkatone service for that number usually ends.

If the Google Voice account already had a free GV number, the old GV number may not be kept forever by default. The source article reminds readers that the old number may expire after roughly four months, so check whether Google Voice offers a “keep permanently” option.

After the port:

  • place one test call;
  • send one test SMS;
  • check incoming calls and messages;
  • check whether you need to preserve the previous GV number;
  • archive Talkatone support emails, Google Voice receipt, and completion email.

Notes

Common failure points:

  • Google Voice says the number cannot be ported;
  • Talkatone support does not reply or does not provide a standard PIN;
  • Google Voice says the account details do not match.

If you only need verification codes, confirm whether the target service accepts Google Voice numbers. Many platforms classify GV as VoIP.
