haha SIM is a Hong Kong prepaid/travel SIM that can work as a low-cost backup Hong Kong number. The BankNav source says the card comes with 50 HKD balance and has no monthly fee. It is managed through the haha TRAVEL app and runs on 3HK infrastructure.

Prices, packages, and validity rules change. Check the haha TRAVEL app, 3HK, and Fortress pages before acting.

Use Cases

This card fits two scenarios:

  • keep a Hong Kong number for occasional verification codes;
  • buy temporary data packages for Hong Kong, Macau, or nearby travel.

For number retention, you do not need a long monthly plan. For travel, buy a package that matches the trip.

Preparation

Prepare:

  • haha SIM physical card;
  • a phone with compatible bands;
  • access to the haha TRAVEL app;
  • an acceptable ID document for real-name registration;
  • a recharge method.

Hong Kong prepaid SIM cards require real-name registration. 3HK and OFCA state that prepaid SIMs must be registered with valid identity documents before local services can be used. 3HK also says individuals can register up to 10 prepaid SIMs with the same operator.

Activation

Insert the SIM first and wait for an SMS. The SMS usually shows the number, balance, or activation entry.

Install the app:

Open haha TRAVEL and scan the QR code on the SIM card, or enter the card information, to bind the SIM. The App Store page says the app can buy data packs, top up, and manage the haha SIM account.

If no SMS arrives, 3HK’s real-name registration page also supports logging in with ICCID. Keep a photo of the SIM card or SIM holder before starting.

Typical flow:

  1. Insert the SIM and use mobile data, with Wi-Fi off.
  2. Wait for the activation SMS, or log in with phone number / ICCID.
  3. Choose personal user and ID type.
  4. Scan the document and confirm name, date of birth, and ID number.
  5. Submit.
  6. Wait for confirmation SMS.

Do not buy “already registered” second-hand prepaid cards. OFCA warns against buying registered cards from unknown sources; they can be suspended later due to identity checks or transfer issues.

Number Retention

The source article’s low-cost idea is: avoid a long-term package, top up a small amount yearly, then buy a one-day Asia data pack to refresh validity.

According to the source:

  • top up 10 HKD yearly for verification-only use;
  • buy a one-day Asia data pack, recorded as 10 HKD;
  • the app may require at least 20 HKD for top-up;
  • 3HK’s online top-up can go as low as 10 HKD;
  • 3HK online top-up supports WeChat Pay, Alipay, Visa, and Mastercard;
  • always check whether the app’s validity date actually refreshed.

Do not rely only on old amounts from tutorials. After every top-up or package purchase, check and screenshot the validity date.

Travel Use

For Hong Kong travel, check the Hong Kong promotions or travel packages inside haha TRAVEL. The source mentioned a Hong Kong monthly package: 38 HKD, 60G Hong Kong data, and 5000 local call minutes, with a reminder to turn off auto-renewal.

Before buying:

  • check the applicable region;
  • check validity period;
  • check whether auto-renewal is enabled.

For short trips, buy only what covers the trip. After activation, test web browsing, maps, SMS reception, and hotspot sharing.

Notes

  • Local service may not work before real-name registration is complete.
  • Validity in the app matters more than a successful top-up receipt.
  • If the SIM has been idle for a long time, test signal, SMS, and balance before travel.
  • Check whether the platform you care about accepts Hong Kong prepaid numbers.
  • Before changing phones or relying on roaming, confirm app login and SMS access.
